Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University

The history of Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agriculture University goes back to the times of the British in the early 20th century. Setting up of an agricultural institute of repute which would help not only the people of Bihar and Bengal but the country too was the brain child of  Lord Curzon. The foundation stone of the Agricultural Research Institute and college was laid by Lord Curzon on the 1st of April, 1905, in Pusa, Samastipur, Bihar. In a speech delivered immediately after laying the foundation stone, he emphasisied on the importance of the institute and the role that it would play. The institute with the best faculty and research opportunities attracted several students from all over the country and even abroad.

In a meeting with the Bihar Planters Association, Lord Curzon fervently hoped that the institute would be of immense service to them in their hour of crisis caused by the German Indigo scientist.

Though he finalised a lot of things but he could not work  on the building architecture. Pusa received an imperial status in 1918, being renamed as the Imperial Agricultural Research Institute (IARI).

In 1934, a major earthquake rocked Bihar which damaged the building seriously. As a result, the Imperial Institute was shifted to the new Pusa campus in New Delhi and that eventually became Indian Agricultural Research Institute. It was downgraded to an agricultural research station until December 3, 1970, when the government of Bihar established Rajendra Agricultural University.

On 11 May 2016 with the passing of the University Bill by the Parliament of India RAU, Pusa was graded to central University and named as Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agriculture University.
